Native American Tattoo Designs

Native American tattoo designs have a very rich history. If you check on tattoo history, you will find out that Native American tattoo designs are rich in body art. There are many cultures all over the world and the Native Americans are just one of the many cultures that practice that art of ink. If you are planning on Native American tattoo designs, at least know the different meanings and symbolisms behind them. These tattoos are more than just decorative ink. Every line has its own meaning and purpose. So better do some research on Native American tattoo designs before choosing a symbol.

Native American tattoos back then bore a resemblance to  tribal tattoos. These tattoos are used to determine the tribe where a person belongs. The American Indians were the first residents of the North American continent until other people landed on their shores and the culture gradually changed. Although Native American tattoo designs may bear a similarity to the modern body art, the significance behind them is completely different. The meanings that they have for the different tattoos of the different cultures also have a different meaning in today’s designs. Modern designs may look a lot like the Native American tattoo designs but they had an entirely different symbol back then. In the past, their tattoos were more like a spiritual concept and a connection with the earth. The Native Americans also had their religious beliefs tattooed on their body since they believe that this is very helpful in warding off evil elements.

In the past, Native American tattoo designs did not use tattoo guns since they did not have that technology yet. However, they managed to tattoo their body with the use of a sharp object and a dye that they made. The process of tattooing during those times involved cutting the skin and placing the dye into the wound so that when the wound healed, it would be in the color and the design that they chose. This is a very painful process as you can imagine!. But these people feel that having Native American tattoo designs on their skins is worthwhile.

Today, there may be people who wear Native American tattoo designs either for beautification or they are proud of their heritage. Tattoo rituals are still being practiced by the original Americans. It is still a part of their culture so Native American tattoo designs are still very much alive even though the process has been simplified and sometimes the original meaning is lost. Those who have Native American roots still retain the culture they have.

The Native American tattoo designs of today can range from the typical designs such as wolves and feathers or images that were settled by the Native Americans. Some people feel that tattoos of Western culture such as cow, skulls, and eagles can also be part of Native American tattoo designs.

Another popular design that falls in line with the Native Americas are the spirit guides. If you think that you can connect yourself with a certain animal, it will surely make a great tattoo. Some of these have been mentioned previously: the wolf, eagle, bear, phoenix, wild cat and other strong animals. Women may choose to have the dream weaver tattoo this is a popular woven amulet that is believed to guard the wearer against bad dreams and other evils that may happen during the night.

Men and women of today find the Native American tattoos attractive and they like to be seen in public wearing them. Some prefer it to be in abstract form. Some may know the meaning behind them while others don`t. They simply want to stay connected to their heritage.
